Advantages of Being A Small Island Nation

I've come to realize that there are some benefits to living in a country which is essentially an island. Mind you it has to be a small one and not a huge one like Australia.

The fact of the matter is that Sri Lanka is a good place to live in (minus all the politics of the country).

Here are the main reasons as to why.....

  1.  You are surrounded by the beach
For me the beach is a mere 20 minute drive so there is an infinite abundance of the beach all around. So if I feel like getting some sea water and a good breeze it just takes me a few minutes to get just that.
  2. Able to travel to all end of the country in less than a day
You know how some people don't get to see all that there is in their own country? Well for us it's not that much of a hassle because the maximum time it would take a person to travel from south of the country to the north would be just about 12 hours. The added benefit is that you don't have to travel there by the plane but can drive it.
  3. You know most people
The thing I discovered is that when it's a small island nation we know someone from  somewhere. When meeting a person first time you would start talking, they start talking about where their from, their family etc etc. At the end of it all you know someone who is either a mutual friend or you find out you'll are related.
  4. Often understand the value of nature
Because of the fact that you are living in a comparatively small country, you realize that nature is important and is vital for existence. Recently I went on a bit of a road trip and went to have a bath in a river. People generally gather at this place to eat as well, they were conscious enough so as not to litter.
  5. Fresh sea food for low prices
In other countries having fresh fish/sea food from the sea is expensive, taking into account the transport cost and everything. But, in a island it's not an issue, since fresh fish is always available at a low price.
