Post to my younger self
Life is going to seem complicated to you at the tender age of 16, you will be maturing as a person, have radical thoughts on how to change the world when you grow up, probably facing your exams right about now. The future looks uncertain, unsure of what you want to do and having the pressure of having to decide right now, you would want to abroad no doubt for your education and you are hoping against hope that you will be able. Friends in school is already applying for colleges and universities abroad and you must be wondering when it will be your turn, don't worry the time will come.
But most importantly this is what I want you to understand, from a somewhat matured person.
1) The cool people are really not that cool
Those people that you think are having a great time and you keep wishing are a part of their inner circle are not as awe-some as you may think. Later on you will realize that it was actually a good thing that you are not in their inner circle, all they seem to do is gossip and back talk about each other. They might go on trips and stuff together with their families but honestly only a one or two of them will you keep in touch and everyone is going to fade into the background.
You will realize that the most important people in your life,at least from school, are going to be the ones that you overlooked and suddenly find yourself still be able to have a good conversation with them whenever you'll get a chance to meet up. You realize they form a link to your past and who you are and where you came from.
2) You are stronger and don't underestimate yourself
you don't realize this now but you are amazing resilient, you will go through a lot within the next few years, you will be surprised at how much of perseverance you have. You will go through a rough patch and yet you are going to get through it, keep reminding yourself that your life is not always going to be in a dark spell and even the the stormiest storms pass by. If you find your self in a dark place, everyday count five things that you are grateful for in your life and everything will seem a little more bearable.
Your probably slacking off for your A/levels and will get bad grades, but don't forget that grades don't define you. The bad grades that you are going to get will set you in a different path altogether and realize that you are smarter than people gave you credit for, you will go onto masters and do well - the reason why underdogs come out top is because they are always underestimated.
3) Insecurities won't go away but you learn to live with it
I still haven't learnt to get rid of my demons that are probably tormenting you now but you do learn to live with it. All that bullying in school at least taught you to take criticism well. you will probably continue to hold onto your secrets strongly and up until now at least you've told only one person basically everything, it is not like how you imagined like it would be, it won't feel like a big weight has been lifted but it will feel like any other day but better because you can now confide in that person.
You will continue to block people off and you will continue to be an introvert but once you move out of home you will learn to be more social and discover a bit of an extrovert in yourself.
4) Value those things that you take for granted
For one, don't take your parents for granted they are the absolute foundation on which you are built, even though to ignore and continue to do from time to time know that they are your biggest critiques and biggest supporters. All those cliches that you read about parents are true and won't realize it until much later when you leave home. They will continue to support you despite the difficulties that they will have to go through.
You are going to be surrounded by some absolutely amazing human beings and you are about to find so many more. Don't let them slip through your fingers so easily they will make your life better and more interesting.
5) Lastly, it's ok to have an uncertain life
You will not have all the answers that you want nor will you have any idea where you are going in life, I still don't know but that's ok. You have to believe that things will turn out alright.
But most importantly this is what I want you to understand, from a somewhat matured person.
