Humans
Many of us fear difference, many of us don't like change or change in others and this is the simple truth that exists today. No matter where you go in this world you will find racism be it in America, Europe, Africa or Asia - it is a deadly disease with no escape.
I've lived in a country whose fabrics were torn apart by racism, with scars that are deeply engraved in the psyche of the country after long years of war. But even after the making it through the grim years of the war and destruction we still allow years of mistrust to continue when in all reality we should be abandoning all suspicion.
Some blame the government and others blame the conspiracy that's a plan to resurrect the terrorist group that once brought hell onto this country. I'm not sure I believe in the conspiracy and I'm not easily swayed by government promises as I see all governments to be egocentric beings that wish to do themselves good.
However, I do believe in people, I believe in their power of good and bad, that not all people are good but nor are they bad but just a combination of the two.
I guess it's a flaw in design just like an object that you would purchase in the market which seems to be damaged, and in a sense we are all damaged. Which is why ethnicity, race, color of skin, sexual preference are such big problems to us.
We have never liked difference, our history pages are spewed with ill-treatment anything which the majority thinks to be different. First the Africans who were thought to be something lesser just because they had a different skin tone, considered to be the identity of the slaves, carrying them off in ship loads to be put to work often in deplorable environments.
In advancement of religion we went to war, we burned people alive because it was thought that god wanted it this way - to force another religion down your throat and make them suffer till they embraced the supposed all forgiving god. The crusade wars, burning of wiccans for being witches, killing Polynesians in south and north America - all example of violence in the name of religion.
We talk about how abusive it is invade another country by force and carry out mass genocide but we have performed it before, colonizing all over the world led to the death of millions who were simply innocent people with no involvement. This happens to this day, in the 21st century - the era of human rights, entering into conflicts in other countries, drone strikes etc all in the name of preserving international peace even though international peace is far from being preserved in this manner. And it will continue to happen.
Then there was the bashing of homosexuals where it was thought to be a mental disease - just because the majority again thought it was something unnatural. While this maybe have significantly reduced in the west than it was 70 years ago, same cannot be said when it comes to the east, with many countries still have the death sentence or criminal sanctions for being a homosexual.
Still I do believe in goodness of people, I've seen it, when people help each other in times of trouble, when people protect others even at the expense of their own safety. In the simple act of just helping a blind man cross the road or even offering a meal to a person who has been starving for most of their lives.
I am disgusted and awed at the same time at humans, their capacity for good and bad is exponential, we define the very thin line that exists between savagery and saints.
But better yet I believe in humanity, I believe that we can never achieve peace and yet I do not believe we thrive on violence - we simply were not made in that way but yet we try hard, we keeping pushing ourselves to either good or bad but we fail and are only able to come close to it and yet we get back up, dust our selves off and start again. Perseverance. That is the beauty of humanity.
