Just a Moment

Life is made of moments, tiny moments that happens, most of the time, by chance. A moment is all that it takes for something to happen, our very existence boils down just to a few moments which has happened by chance. Just think about it, if not for the coincidence of a big bang this world would not have been created in fact this whole universe would not have been created. If not for the coincidence of the fact that earth is at a convenient location which enable it to have life, there would be nothing around you. If not for the coincidence, a moment which favored evolution turning a single cell to unicellular animals that we are, we would not have come into existence, the whole of mankind would not exist. But more importantly, if not for the chance meeting for your parents, the fact that they met someway or another, you would not be alive today. Your existence today is because of a chance, because of a moment in time. We have developed this fallacy, an illusion that we have cont...

Life of a Final year Law Student

The past month has been hectic to say the least - from reading through articles, to meeting deadelines one often forget to live. Within the past two week I had 2 submissions, one which I finished within the last week of November, the other which I finished only a day before the submission. Now when I started law school my lecturers always used to tell us to finish any assignment at least 2 weeks before submissions, so that we have time to go through it, edit and what not. But how is this possible when we haven't covered the subject matter or the reading through articles which are 30 pages per article? But there is no time to give up or spend time idly, it was crunch time and so I spent most of my days stuck in my room trying to get through the mammoth size reading list before me. By some miracle I manged to read what I wanted to and still live. So when I submitted my first submission there was no time to even give a sigh of relief. Oh no, I had to prepare for the next subm...

What Goes Around Comes Around

Found this story on a website. The author is unknown. One day a man saw an old lady, stranded on the side of the road, but even in the dim light of day, he could see she needed help. So he pulled up in front of her Mercedes and got out. His Pontiac was still sputtering when he approached her. Even with the smile on his face, she was worried. No one had stopped to help for the last hour or so. Was he going to hurt her? He didn’t look safe; he looked poor and hungry. He could see that she was frightened, standing out there in the cold. He knew how she felt. It was those chills which only fear can put in you. He said, “I’m here to help you, ma’am. Why don’t you wait in the car where it’s warm? By the way, my name is Bryan Anderson.” Well, all she had was a flat tire, but for an old lady, that was bad enough. Bryan crawled under the car looking for a place to put the jack, skinning his knuckles a time or two. Soon he was able to change the tire. But he had to get dirty a...

College

Here I am, 4 weeks into college and I'm starting to feel the dead weight of work starting to sink in. The irony is that during our first day of lectures of this year, our lecturer walked in saying that the worst (being the second year) is behind us, but I think she was wrong. I have four 3000 words assignments due in January, a 15,000 word dissertation due in may and of course, two exams in may. On top of that my export lecturer is not helpful at all. You know those lecturers who mumble to themselves in stead of lecturing? So much so, that your mind automatically drifts away? Well, I'm lucky enough to have one of them. It's kind of sad really cause apparently it's one of the easiest modules to pass and here he is, making all the students fall asleep. The bright side however to all this, is that in another 7-8 months I'll be done with studies for the time being.

Final Year

I'm two weeks into my final year and let's just say that it has been a bit hectic. See, my final year law subjects are all optional and after selecting the modules we are given 2 weeks to change it. Now the thing is that during these two weeks we can attend any lectures that we want in order to get the  feel of it. However, let me tell you that it was no help at all, because initially all modules seems easy but then half way through it, it starts to get really tough. So after two week of contemplation just (and not to mention much thought) I finally selected the modules that I wanted and now I just hope that i made the right decisions. But other than the module debacle, it actually feels really good to know that within another 7-8 months I'll be done with law and moving onto my next adventure. Though of course I still have to get through my exams and assignment, also,  hopefully get a really good classification. So here is to another year of sleepless nights, coffee ...

Miss America

By now I'm sure that most of the people reading this, would have got to know about the racist comments that were hurled at the present Miss. America, all because she is of Indian decent. Now the thing is that most people who tweeted all these racist tweets should either get themselves a new brain or go back to kindergarten. Just some minor facts; 1. India is in ASIA and not the MIDDLE EAST. 2. People from India are called INDIANS not Egyptian or any other nationality. 3. If she wasn't American I'm sure they would not have allowed her to participate. 4. Al-Queda would not deploy women to integrate into American society by winning a beauty              pageant. They are far too busy to plotting other things than hoping someone they placed will win      a beauty pageant. 5. And no, she would not be alive or in USA if she did help in the 9/11 attacks. People really do need to get their facts straight even ...

Asking for Too Much Help?

There is something called too much help. This is significantly exploited by the female population of this world. Sometimes when a friend asks for your help in doing something, you help them out but when it gets out of hand and becomes a burden it can no longer be classified as a favor or help. Recently I helped this friend to do some research for her college assignment and I agreed because she was, at the time, flooded with assignments. We were studied 2 completely different degrees, so much so that I really didn't know all that she asked me to research. I told her that I wouldn't be much of help since I didn't know anything  about the subject matter and wouldn't be able to know if what I found would be useful or not. But of course, she insisted that it would be fine. So I did a somewhat decent amount of research and gave her some links which might have been useful. A few days later she says she's in a fix and that she is desperate for help. This time she ...

Procrastination is The Way To Go

You know how sometimes you tend to procrastinate? How you put of things that you should really do? Well, I'm a compulsive procrastinator. No matter what it is, I will procrastinate. I'm an extremely skinny guy and I kid you not when I say that, I weigh just below 50 Kgs. Recently (meaning almost a year back)  I've been planning to join the gym which is literally 30 meters away from my house. But me being who I am, I've been procrastinating, always putting it off because of some small minor details. I know I should go to the gym and start a program where I can build muscles while at the same time gaining weight but hey, I procrastinate like the world is going to end. It is kind of sad actually cause I've been meaning to go to the gym for the past 5 odd months. Initially there was my exams so I said to myself that  I'll go after the exams cause, you know, it's logical to focus on your studies. Then holidays came about I convinced myself that I...

Lunch Incident

Recently I went out with a couple of friends to watch a movie and go for lunch afterwards. We went for lunch to this restaurant named sizzles. So we ordered food and was just chatting away, when a whole crowd of east asian (most probably korean) tourists walk in. There were about 10-15 odd people in the group. They were shown into a private room so that all of them could fit in. In the mean time our food arrived and we started to dig in. Half way through our meals one of the tourists came out the said room and started going from table to table peeping into other peoples food to see what they have ordered and what it looked like. She even came to our table and peeped in. Unfortunately she was not the only one out of the group, after she retired back into the private room another couple came out and started doing the same thing. I do wonder if they realize how rude it was of them to go on peeping at other peoples food. I mean it's understandable if you want to check out how...

Advantages of Being A Small Island Nation

I've come to realize that there are some benefits to living in a country which is essentially an island. Mind you it has to be a small one and not a huge one like Australia. The fact of the matter is that Sri Lanka is a good place to live in (minus all the politics of the country). Here are the main reasons as to why.....  You are surrounded by the beach For me the beach is a mere 20 minute drive so there is an infinite abundance of the beach all around. So if I feel like getting some sea water and a good breeze it just takes me a few minutes to get just that. Able to travel to all end of the country in less than a day You know how some people don't get to see all that there is in their own country? Well for us it's not that much of a hassle because the maximum time it would take a person to travel from south of the country to the north would be just about 12 hours. The added benefit is that you don't have to travel there by the plane but can drive it. You kno...

Another you?

Have you ever wanted to have another you? someone who looks like you, speaks like you? See I've always wanted a twin and not just any twin but an identical twin. It would be one of the coolest things that could happen because not only do you get a brother/sister but you get a brother/sister who looks exactly like you. And what more? you'll share the same birthday so that when you grow older you can actually split cost of birthday parties between yourselves since you'll would have common friends. Just think of all the mischief you could get into, while in school, if you'll are in two different classes you'll could switch class for a change. When you get caught doing something you're not supposed it's a little comforting to know that there's another you to be besides you. Besides, you'll wouldn't need other best friends cause nature some how handpicked your best friend to be born as you twin. You'll would know about each other more t...

Bonds Break

I hate to admit it but I'm a bit of a pessimist. I'm a pessimist when it comes to things which involve real life. I see all relationships in this world to be a bit superficial and having a expiration date. They maybe romantic in nature or just friendship but life so far has taught me that there is always a time when everything comes to an end. It maybe today, tomorrow, a week from now or even year from now but there is always a time when everything comes to an end. There are definitely friends that you come across in life who are friends who are timeless friends.Who you've known for a long time and who you will continue to know for years to come. These are the kind of friends who know you better than you know yourself and there are only a few handful of them in this world. Then there are friends who are in disguised as friends but are actually your enemies. Who are plotting and scheming you're very downfall. Then are the type of friends who were meant to be in ...

With Age Comes Wisdom

One of the inevitable things that happens when you grow up is the fact that as you grow older you become wiser. This is very true when you go through puberty, practically overnight you become one of those wise old fellas that you read in books. As you grow up you stubble upon those lessons that life throws on you  and that you swear that you would never make when you were younger. The sad thing is that once you grow older that spell that you once had as a child of simplicity and ignorant bliss  is broken. I for one used to believe that anything was possible, that I was able to live like rich men do practically overnight and now here I am, 19 years later, realizing that it's not as simple as I thought it to be. I know it's a bit of a cliche but I really do wish that I remain as a child so that I don't have to worry about anything. But life is a bit of a mystery and you'll just have to wait and find out what's around the corner. But here's how I see it,...

Olympus Has Fallen

Image
If you are into the world being taken over, killing of the American president and a whole action packed movie then I highly recommend you watch this film (that's if you haven't already watched it). This movie keeps you on the edge of the seat through it all, it may very well be one of the top movies of the year. The general story line is that there are rising tensions between North Korea and the it's Southerly neighbor, as per usual the U.S.A is providing troops for South Korea. The  South Korean prime minister is in USA to discuss further their plans. While engaged in discussions all hell breaks lose (so to speak), when this Korean terrorist who master minds the take over of the white house and taking the president of USA and other high ranking officials as hostage. His plan is to annihilate America.  That's the basic outline of the story and it is definitely one of those movies that you need to watch . However, a bit more thought should have been put into the...

A Late Night Rant

Right now it's 11:26 pm in the paradise island which is called Sri Lanka. So I got my results the other day. My college has the habit of posting the result via registered post so that even parents can find out the results. Yeah I know it sucks and if anyone is going through the same thing out there you have my deepest sympathies, I know how it hurts. I think it's safe to say that when we grow up and enter university/college we are mature enough to have results be released without our parents having to find out what our results actually are. Because in all reality they are very fragile (which makes me wonder why a law suit has not been brought against such institutions) and just imagine them opening a letter which states that their son/daughter has failed (which is not so in my case) and there is that slight possibility (no matter how small) that they could have a heart attack or slip into a coma. But noooo, these institutions don't take that into consideration.  Now fir...

Lord of the rings

Since it's the vacation I started reading the Lord of The Rings books, while i do find it very interesting and fascinating, there are times when it seems to a bit of a bore. It is a very good piece of literature but often I find that it goes into very long description, which often spans to a couple of pages. But then again, I suppose that this is true of all the very successful literature, i mean take a look at the Harry Potter series. Even in Harry Potter the books do tend to go into lengthy description which initially, is very interesting but then after sometime it tends to get very boring. Authors should most probably realize that there are readers who don't like lengthy description of anything. Though however, there are people who would find it quite delightful to have that  lengthy description because it adds to the ambiance of the book. Personally however, I don't want anything to have long descriptions because it tends to get boring very fast.

Vesak

Image
Here in this tiny country another festival has dawned, with lights lighting up the streets and the country blooming into a spring of colors. To those who are wondering what is Wesak right now, here is a little introduction to it, it's the day that the Lord Buddha was born, attained enlightenment and died. Somewhat similar to Christmas in that aspect, anyway we celebrate this day and it's normally a public holiday and they also have an extra day of public holiday being the day after wesak. So during these days there is a lot of traditions a few of them involve setting up pandals and lanterns. In my family it is somewhat of a tradition to make lantern and decorate it which is a pretty rewarding experience but at the same time a bit tiring. When the day of wesak draws closer we get our old string of firelight and bulbs and what not and set up lanterns, during this time of the year almost every house has a lanterns. There are also lantern competitions which are put out to displ...

When I Was But A Whee Little Lad

Today one of my friends and I visited a friends house and he had a little brother of maybe, 6 years of age. Like any other younger brother he started pestering everyone around and the elder brother (who is my friend) sternly told him to stop annoying us. This behavior tends to happen all the time and I think it's more to do with younger brothers than younger sisters. Naturally this brought back memories for me, I am the youngest of the two children in our family. when I was younger my sister used to bring her friends over sometimes, either to study or just like a spend the day kind of thing. I remember that I used to always go and bug them, either by showing something or just acting stupid. I'm not sure what I wanted to accomplish, whether it was to have the spot light on me or that I felt that it was my duty to keep our guest entertained, either way I could not help but always stay with them and doing something that was irritating.  My sister always went and told my mum th...

Letter From Abraham Lincoln To His Son's Teacher

I do not know how many of you have read the following extract but I thought it to be inspirational and is a fine example of what teachers today should strive for. Education should not be confined to books alone. Enjoy the read.. My son starts school today. It is all going to be strange and new to him for a while and I wish you would treat him gently. It is an adventure that might take him across continents. All adventures that probably include wars, tragedy and sorrow. To live this life will require faith, love and courage. So dear Teacher, will you please take him by his hand and teach him things he will have to know, teaching him - but gently, if you can. Teach him that for every enemy, there is a friend. He will have to know that all men are not just, that all men are not true. But teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero, that for every crooked politician, there is a dedicated leader. Teach him if you can that 10 cents earned is of far more value than a...

Exams over.....

So I finished my exams this week and just like that I'm done with another year of college. The stress of it all has been shaken of, it's actually a very pleasant feeling that you get when you realize that you don't have to look at another academic book for another 3 odd months. Most of my friends are going to intern pretty soon and then there's me, I've still not planned how I'm going to spend my 3 odd months. But I do not want to be rushed into an internship soon after exams. It's quite a hassle to be a student, I think our parents should give us more credit for being a student. They are under the impression that being a student is such a simple task, having only to study and sit for exams but what they do not realize is the toll it has on us. But I have one important question to ask, it's that does our grades or our degree carve out our destiny?  Just because we get low grades or a bad degree classification, does it mean it's the end of the r...

Is It All Worth It? (2)

Continuation from my previous post... After reading the story, it got me thinking if this is what life is all about? The same cycle that everyone routinely follows. The first phase of the cycle is being born, growing up, studying so that you could reach great heights some day. The whole while you are studying for exams, try to beat the other kid who got higher marks than you did last time. The second phase of the cycle is finding a job trying to settle into the slow pace of the thing we call life, we get up in the morning to go to work and then come back home in the evening, almost everyday. The third phase of the cycle is getting married and then having kids, still you get up early in the morning to go to work so that you could support your family. Sometimes disputes arise between your spouse and then before you know your children have married. the fourth phase is where you retire, have grandchildren and try to live the rest of your life at a very slow pace and eventually you die...

Is It All Worth It? (1)

This is a story that I came across on facebook; As the dream of most parents I had acquired a degree in Software Engineering and joined a company based in USA, the land of braves and opportunity. When I arriv ed in the USA, it was as if a dream had come true. Here at last I was in the place where I want to be. I decided I would be staying in this country for about Five years in which time I would have earned enough money to settle down in India. My father was a government employee and after his retirement, the only asset he could acquire was a decent one bedroom flat. I wanted to do some thing more than him. I started feeling homesick and lonely as the time passed. I used to call home and speak to my parents every week using cheap international phone cards. Two years passed, two years of Burgers at McDonald's and pizzas and discos and 2 years watching the foreign exchange rate getting happy whenever the Rupee value went down. Finally I decided to get married....

Being a lankan

With recent developments in this island nation (to those of you unaware) is that recently a group of monks formed an organization calling themselves Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) has recently sprung up and is carrying out anti-muslim propaganda. They are of the wrong view that they are doing good on behalf of the Sinhalese community in Sri Lanka. One of their agendas  included abolition of the haalal certificate. Having achieved this, now they've turned their sights on banning the Muslim women's attire. What is sad is the fact that this propaganda is being led by monks and what's sadder is the fact that there are people who blindly follow them without using their own common senses. What's fascinating is that BBS has the audacity to say that they cannot be held responsible for the divide being caused.  Having finished an ethnic war which lasted for 30 years, we are now marching into another one after which, I'm not sure how much of the Sri Lankan identity will remain in...

Dreaming big

Image
Like any other teenager (or even a normal person for that matter ) has dreams that they wish to accomplish in life, for me however, things that I wish to accomplish are different things.  See, I view life as a once in a life time opportunity and I'm a true believer in that life should be lived to its fullest. Since I'm mostly a pleasure seeker I've put together a list of things that  I want to do before I get married (since this is the most appropriate time to do these things while you're still a bachelor) . So starting off, in no particular order : Go to Rio for carnival                            It is very intriguing to think that Brazilians have dedicated almost like 2 months to just go out onto the streets and to start dancing and form parades and all. In my country there is nothing of the sort, I mean to think, these people are not worried about payment or work during this special celebratio...

A recently watched video

So there was a video posted on facebook and it showed videos how (according to the video) cows were being slaughtered in conformity of halal in comparison to the British traditional way of slaughtering(bullet through the brain), basically it showed how these animal's throat was cut open and how the cow was trying to struggle and moo but to no avail. The video stated that this was in the halal way and was basically insulting Islam. The comments section had a lot of people saying it was wrong and  some of the following being the comments; " Elizabeth you idiot this has nothing to do with meat eaters its to do with a backward group of beasts following barbaric teachings" and   " Paul, anyone who tries to put this on anyone who eats meat IS an idiot, you and her included. Its the people who support halal who are the problem." not only is it racist but it's also a bit ironic because whatever said and done, no matter what way you slaughter the ultimat...

You might not want to read this if you're a very religious person

So recently I met up with some friends and one of them came out and said that he is a bisexual. Thereafter, we got into the topic of religion and being gay. I just don't get why so many people are against LGBT's, it kind of comes off  very vain. No offense to those who are christens but doesn't the bible say that man was created in the image of god (i might be wrong since I'm an atheist) and if god really did create man in his image then doesn't that mean god really can't blame it on people, because after all, technically he did create people.  And if people are  the ones who are committing these so called crimes and sins it eventually gods work isn't it? because if he can control the universe, then inadvertently he is controlling our actions and thus, if he is controlling our actions then that means that he is making people who are LGBTs who they are. It's not only Christianity other religions like Islam, Judism   condemns LGBTs . I think part of th...

In the middle of a supposed "Assignement"

So here we are, into 2013 and right about now everyone is scrambling to start/implement their new years resolution. In the meantime, here I am three days away from an assignment submission, listening to songs and contemplating the deeper meaning of life, while my assignment is wallowing away and I am nowhere close to finishing it. They honestly should consider removing tertiary education from the face of this earth, I mean how many people go into depression all because they did not get the grades they wanted or the fact that they couldn't get into a really good university. If you ask me, I think it's an infringement upon my human rights. Want to know why I think that? well, it is a form of mental trauma which has been intentionally inflicted on us, which inadvertently means that it's a form of mental torture. But unfortunately the current human right do not recognize mental trauma.........or at least i don't think so. But just imagine if it was recognized and having ...
